Balancing the Budget
Low oil prices and fiscal mismanagement have plunged Alaska into the worst budget crisis in our history. Whatever fiscal problems we have had in the past 6 years have really been exacerbated this last year due to the further decline in the price and production of oil and by the continued spending down of the state’s various savings accounts. Going into 2021, we will have to make some very tough decisions.
We need a comprehensive fiscal plan. Adam voted for one in 2018 but it didn’t pass the Senate. Without a comprehensive plan, the politicians will burn through our savings and there will be no PFD in four years. In fact we are very close to that situation now. Any politician that tells you that we can solve this crisis with budget cuts alone either doesn’t know what they are talking about or is just telling you what they think you want to hear. Only with a comprehensive fiscal plan that balances cuts with new revenues will put Alaska back on track and protect your PFD from total elimination.
Unfortunately the career politicians were able to block any meaningful action to put Alaska back on track, and it is more important than ever that we elect real leaders who will make the tough choices and put Alaska first.
